The EU Commission has started infringement proceedings against Slovakia for breaching EU rules on the protection of whistleblowers. This comes after the government fast-tracked amendments through Parliament in December 2025 to dissolve the Slovak Whistleblower Protection Office, thus removing its leadership, and significantly reducing protections for whistleblowers, whose impact would have included withdrawing protection from whistleblowers, even if previously protected under the law.

The new whistleblower protection law was suspended by the Slovak Constitutional Court in mid December 2025 until the court decides on the substance regarding its compliance with Slovak constitutional law, in its full review in a few months.
